My version of this easy stewed cabbage my mom usually cooks. It is a great warm winter meal. You can serve it as a vegetable dish or add some meat.

I like to serve this stewed cabbage with mashed potatoes, but it goes great with polenta, couscous, baked potatoes, gnocchi and more.

You can also add some sugar to it and make it a sweet stewed cabbage.

Enjoy.

Kremno dušeno zelje

Creamy stewed cabbage

Cook Time 1 hour
Servings 4 portions

Ingredients

  • 1 onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 540 grams of cabbage
  • 250 grams of whole canned tomatoes
  • 100 ml of cooking cream
  • Bay leaf
  • Pinch of ground cumin
  • 1 tea spoon of paprika powder
  • 1 tea spoon of celery (dry leaves spice)
  • Olive oil
  • 1 tea spoon of starch

Instructions

  • Chop up the onion and sear it on olive oil until crystalized. Cut cabbage to smaller ribbons, rinse it under water.
  • Chop up garlic and add it to the onion and sear for a minute, then add in the cabbage. Slice up canned tomatoes and add it to the cabbage.
  • Season with salt, black pepper, celery, paprika powder, cumin and add the bay leaf. (you can also add some sugar to make it a bit sweet)
Add 2 dl of water and simmer for up to 40 minutes or until cabbage is soft enough. In the meantime stir and add water little by little when it gets too dry.
  • Near the end of cooking add cooking cream. Put starch in a cup with some water, stir it and also add to the cabbage and stir until nicely combined. It should thicken it a bit.
Taste if needed additional seasoning, serve hot with mash potatoes, polenta or other.
