Delicious Funnel Cake is super crispy, fried and sweet. It’s perfect food for carnival season and it is easily made with simple ingredients I bet you already have on stock.

Just mix it into a batter and fry it in hot vegetable oil with a help of a fennel or a piping bag. Make sure you do circle moves to shape it into a nest. Don’t over fried it or it will taste burnt. You can do small or big nest sizes.

The Funnel Cake itself is not that sweet so the icing sugar on top is necessary, but you can add other toppings to your liking too. Like whipped cream, ice cream, fresh fruit, honey, chocolate spread,…

Eat it fresh while it’s nice and crispy.

Funnel Cake

Cook Time 45 minutes
Servings 14 cakes

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 table spoon of sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 dl of milk
  • 200 grams of flour
  • Half a bag of baking powder (7 grams)
  • Vanilla extract
  • Sunflower oil for frying

Topping:

  • Icing sugar

Additional toppings:

  • Whipped Cream
  • Fresh strawberries
  • Honey

Instructions

  • Put sunflower oil in a pot and heat it up. While you are waiting just mix all other ingredients. Start with eggs, add sugar, vanilla, pinch of salt, mix and then mix in milk and at the end add flour and baking powder. Mix until smooth.
  • Drizzle a little of batter in the oil to test if it is hot enough to make bubbles around it. Make sure it’s not smoking hot.
There are more ways to pour the batter in oil.
You can use a fennel. Add batter (enough for one cake) to a funnel while you keep your finger at the bottom hole. Bring the funnel over the hot oil and release your finger to start a stream of batter while moving the funnel in a circular motion to create spiral-like shapes.
Or you can use a piping bag, like I did. I just added the batter to a strong plastic bag, made a knots at the top and cut off one edge (smaller hole). I brought it over the hot oil and it basically runs out on its own, so turn it up when you want it to stop. Make sure you do circle moves to shape it into a nest.
  • Fry until it’s lightly brown on the bottom side, then flip it over and fry on the other side too. Make sure you drain it well and bring it to a paper towel to soak up the extra oil.
Sprinkle with icing sugar and serve. Add more toppings if you want.
